November 4, 2009 Phoenix College got off to a great start Tuesday evening in their first game of the season with a 85-68 home win over Westwind Prep International.Phoenix College Head Coach Matt Gordon is one of the top junior college coaches in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC), and always does a great job of having his teams prepared, which was no different Tuesday evening. Phoenix College would take a 43-34 halftime lead, and would not look back in the game's second half, as the Bears would keep pace with the high-powered offense of Westwind Prep. With Westwind firing numerous three-point attempts in the game, Phoenix College would do an excellent job of rebounding the basketball and getting out on their own fast break. A smaller Phoenix College lineup, led by 6-foot-4 freshman forward Darrell Farr (team-high 10 rebounds) and 6-foot-3 freshman forward Sean Boston (8 rebounds), would outrebound Westwind Prep 51-38. 6-foot-1 sophomore guard Elgin Caldwell and 6-foot-4 sophomore transfer Shayar Lee led the way for the Bears with 22 and 21 points, as they were both on fire all game and handled the defensive pressure very well, leading the Bears' scoring attack. Farr would also pump in 12 points, while Boston would contribute 10 points. 6-foot-8 sophomore Adam Arcienega would also finish with 9 points and 4 rebounds of his own. 6-foot-6 post-graduate San Diego State commit Jamaal Franklin would lead Westwind Prep International with 19 points and 8 rebounds. 6-foot-8 New Mexico commit Tony Snell finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while 6-foot-5 senior Brandon Tuggle would also finish with 15 points in the loss. |
