November 7, 2009 After a poor season last year for Desert Vista High School (8-17), one of the state's top basketball programs, the Thunder is back this season under the leadership of successful Head Coach Doug Harris.Harris, one of the state's elite head coaches, will have his work cut out for him this high school season, as he returns an inexperienced lineup of players. With 5-foot-10, 150-pound senior point guard Lorenzo Ford running the point position effectively this season, after coming on late last season, the Thunder will rely heavily on the scoring of 6-foot-4, 170-pound combo-guard Duncan Schramm. While Schramm saw very limited action last season, the very skilled and crafty senior guard worked very hard in the off-season. Schramm had a terrific summer and fall in preparation for the up and coming high school season. Schramm travelled to Los Angeles, CA, this July during the evaluation period to take part in the Double Pump All-Star Camp at Cal-State Dominguez Hills. With more than 400 campers in attendance for this year's camp, Schramm would earn a Top-20 All-Star appearance in the camp, amidst more than 200 college coaches in attendance. "It was great," said Schramm. "There were a lot of coaches there, and I really got a chance to show what I can do." Schramm would then participate in this year's 11th Annual Arizona Preps Fall Showcase, where he would again earn a Top 30 All-Star appearance in the event. Schramm was one of the top overall performing prospects in the event, and surprised many scouts in attendance with his unique feel for the game and ability to shoot the basketball. "I've really been working on my mid-range game this summer," Schramm told us. "It makes the game a lot easier." Schramm will look to provide very good scoring this season for the Thunder, while also being a very unselfish player. "I love to pass the ball," said Schramm. "It feels just as good making an assist to an open teammate as it does scoring." Schramm's overall unique feel for the game allows for him to excel on the basketball court. He has a very good handle of the basketball, while also possessing one of the state's deadliest shooting strokes from anywhere on the floor. Schramm is also capable of shooting the basketball from the standstill position on the floor or off the dribble, where he is also capable of creating his own shot. Schramm has very good size for a combo-guard, especially while playing the point position, which he will be capable of playing at the collegiate level - something that should make him a lot more attractive to college programs. Schramm's best asset is his feel for playing the game of basketball, which comes from his love for the game. He seems to be enjoying himself on the basketball court, and it comes out in his approach to the game, as he competes hard and plays to win. Schramm is also a good defender and has no problems guarding quicker guards on the floor, as he possesses good lateral quickness. He is also a very good team defender and has a good understanding of help-side defense. Currently, Schramm is hearing from such schools as Oregon State, Air Force and Tulane, with more schools beginning to show interest as of late. Schramm is also an excellent student and carries a 3.6 CUM GPA. Arizona Preps will continue to follow Schramm's recruitment closely this high school season, as he looks to put in work for the Thunder in his final season. |
